Mil-Spec Painter/ Utility Technician


Space Machine & Engineering (SME) is currently seeking a candidate with previous mil-spec painting experience as well as the ability to perform duties as a utility technician. Job duties may include some to all responsibilities below, dependent on employee’s experience.



  • 7:00am-3:30pm, Mon-Fri.



  • Experience with painting per mil-spec using gravity fed HVLP spray guns.
  • Masking assemblies prior to the paint process.
  • Interpreting blueprints where masking is required.
  • Plugging through holes and masking contact surfaces where specified.
  • Organize paint and supplies in a professional manner.
  • Change air filters as required.
  • Refer to the job travelers and the assembly prints concerning paint requirements.
  • Identify type of paint and masked areas of assemblies.
  • Perform the painting process in a safe and professional manner.
  • Complete any required documentation for each work traveler.
  • De-masking assemblies after the paint process.
  • Prepping flanges by clearing mounting holes and flange edges of any rough paint finish.
  • Inspecting paint finish and identifying any potential cosmetic issues.



  • Bead blasting assemblies for a desired surface condition.
  • Graining assembly flanges for a smooth contact surface condition.
  • Filing and prepping braze joints for a smooth waveguide to flange transition.
  • Prepping the exterior of assemblies with various air tools and hand tools.
  • Washing and degreasing assemblies prior to bead blasting.
  • Protecting threaded holes with tape, plugs or hardware prior to bead blasting.
  • Ultrasonically cleaning assemblies to remove contamination.
  • Verify quantities and package assemblies for transport to outside services.
  • Inspecting assemblies for damage or nonconforming conditions.
  • Inspect and identify any potential surface conditions that may affect the plating process.
  • Visually inspect silver plated assemblies.
  • Verify through hole dimensions after plating with pin gages.
  • Verify tapped holes with go / no go tap gages.
  • Pressure test assemblies to the print specifications.
  • Wrap and package assemblies for shipment.
  • Responsible for keeping work areas clean and organized.



  • 2 years’ experience with a gravity fed HVLP spray guns preferred
  • 1+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment
  • S. citizenship required




  • The ability to work in a loud environment
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
